On January 22, 1905, Russian workers marching peacefully to petition their Tsar were gunned down in the snow outside the Winter Palace. The Tsar wasn't even there. The massacre destroyed the bond between ruler and ruled, sparked the 1905 Revolution, and set Russia on a path that ended with the Romanov dynasty's extinction fourteen years later.
