On May 29, 1914, the RMS Empress of Ireland sank in fourteen minutes in the St. Lawrence River, killing 1,012 people, more passengers than the Titanic. She carried every post-Titanic safety upgrade available, and it wasn't enough. Two countries held separate inquiries and reached opposite verdicts. Then World War I began, and the world forgot.
