On May 12, 1902, 147,000 coal miners walked off the job in the largest labor action in American history, and they were right about every grievance. But the story of what they won, and what the century after cost their communities, is far more complex than the history books suggest. This episode traces the arc from the strikeโ€™s courageous beginning through the political maneuvering of Roosevelt and J.P. Morgan, the union recognition that was never granted, and the slow extraction that left Appalachian communities behind. The courage was real. So was the betrayal. Both things are true.
